POSITION

Summer Instructor for Riprap Adventures

PURPOSE OF ROLE of the position within the company (summary of position): 

The Summer Instructor's responsibilities include creating a safe, fun, and organized learning environment for students ages 6 to 11. This includes supervising, facilitating, and participating in activities with the students with a focus on outdoor adventure and environmental education.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS and how they relate to the purpose or role of the employee:

1. Must be able to stand for long periods

2. Lift and carry up to 50 lbs

3. Must be able to communicate verbally with good voice projection

4. Ability to swim

QUALIFICATIONS and how they relate to the purpose or role of the employee:

1. Must be at least 18 years old and possess a high school diploma

2. Must possess a valid US driver’s license

3. Experience/Education in early childhood education, environmental education, and/or outdoor recreation

4. Must enjoy being outdoors and willing to deal with the heat, humidity, rain, bugs, dirt, etc.

5. Wilderness First Aid & CPR certifications are required before working with youth

RESPONSIBILITIES and how they relate to the purpose or role of the employee:

1. Attend all training and in-services

2. Effectively manage drop-off and pickup procedures including acting as the main point of contact for families

3. Drive a van to and from all program locations in a safe manner

4. Provide supervision for students in all aspects of program experience

5. Know the whereabouts of each student at all times keeping in mind that students are never to be left unattended

6. Establish a rapport with every student through thoughtful observation, interaction, and conversation daily

7. Vigilantly observe student behavior and thoughtfully apply appropriate behavior management techniques

8. Provide quality example as a role model for students by demonstrating timeliness, appropriate language, professional appearance, concern for safety, friendliness, and orderliness throughout the experience.

9. Instruct, supervise, and participate with students in age-appropriate/developmentally-appropriate community-building exercises throughout the program including but not limited to morning meetings, team-building, reflections, and songs.

10. Instruct, supervise and participate with students in age-appropriate/developmentally-appropriate outdoor adventure activities including but not limited to hiking, canoeing, tubing, sup, orienteering, climbing, swimming, and caving.

11. Instruct, supervise, and participate with students in age-appropriate/developmentally-appropriate environmental education lessons including but not limited to flora and fauna ID, water quality testing, Leave No Trace education, and guest speaker series.

12. Assist the Director in the coordination and communication with guest speakers and field trip contacts.

13. Manage student's water, snack and lunch breaks to ensure campers maintain adequate hydration and nutrition

14. Ensure the safety of all students around water activities

15. Make location and activity changes in the field based on safety protocols provided by leadership.

16. Provide each family with daily updates including behavior, dietary, and activity updates.

17. Take photos of the students in activities throughout the day

18. Participate in the general planning and improvement of the program

19. Keep all equipment in good operating condition and be responsible for returning items to their proper place

20. Maintain required program records

21. Maintain positive relations with all students, parents, and other staff

22. Report all program changes and equipment needs to the Director.

23. Report to the Director any difficult or unusual situations.
